Black Heritage Festival blends cultures of Africa, SW La.

The annual Black Heritage Festival will be held March 7-8 and feature live entertainment including headliner R&B artist Lenny Williams, food, and activities for all ages. The festival brings together the cultures of Africa and Southwest Louisiana and highlights the best in the community.

The two-day event opens up with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the theater at Central School, 809 Kirby St.

Saturday’s events on March 8 will take place at the Lake Charles Civic Center, 900 Lakeshore Drive, and will include a Baby Expo/Healthy Baby Contest, Vendor’s Expo, Africana Culture Performances Extravaganza, Zydeco Aerobics, a Hall of Fame Ceremony, educational workshops among others.

Several spaces in the Civic Center will focus solely interactive activities and workshops focusing exclusively on black heritage. Food booths in the interactive experience will serve Louisiana Creole and traditional African-American foods, including gumbo, jambalaya and barbecue.

For live entertainment, the smooth sounds of acclaimed R&B artist Lenny Williams beginning at 5 p.m. as well as zydeco musician Chris Ardoin 2-6 p.m.

Children will be able to enjoy games, face painting, balloon art, and a youth talent show. Door prizes will also be given away including bicycles, tablets, movie passes and more.
