Barbe beats Dutchtown in Class 5A tournament

NEW ORLEANS — The Bucs finally got a break.
Barbe scored two runs on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning to escape with a 2-1 win over Dutchtown in a Class 5A quarterfinal game at Turchin Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.
The Bucs (31-6) advance to face the Jesuit-Byrd winner in the semifinals at 2 p.m. today. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.
Dutchtown finished the season 27-10.
Trey Quinn hit a dribbler to second with two outs in the sixth. The throw to first was hurried and got past the first baseman and rolled into the Dutchtown dugout, allowing Bryce Jordan to score from third and Mandy Cintron from second with the winning run.
“I was visualizing going (opposite field) with the slider he was throwing,” said Quinn. “On the dribbler, I was just thinking about going hard and trying to run it out and we got lucky. Our pitchers were great, giving up only one run and keeping us in the game.” Jordan was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth and Cintron followed with a single to center.
Barbe coach Glenn Cecchini said Barbe received the kind of break needed to win a championship.
“We were fortunate to win,” he said. “I am real big on making your own luck, but we have won five championships, and each one of those years we got a break. Sometimes you don’t get breaks, and then it is hard to win. Dutchtown played well enough to win. Things didn’t go their way.
