The Barbe Bucs rallied from a fourth-set deficit to end a five-year jinx, beating Covington in five sets to advance to the state tournament for the first time since 2008 and the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2004.

Sixth-seeded Barbe beat No. 11 Covington 25-18, 23-35, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11 on Monday night.

The Bucs will meet No. 3 Fontainebleau at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner in a Division I quarterfinal.

The Bucs (31-8) had to survive a late scare to earn the trip. The Lions, behind the powerful hitting of Zhaniece Parker, took an 18-13 lead in the fourth set before the Bucs stormed back, closing the set with a 12-4 surge to force a deciding set. Bailey Bruchhaus closed the set with a pair of aces as the Bucs scored the final five points of the set.

Barbe took a 6-1 lead in the fifth behind four kills from Peyton Montgomery. The Lions fought back to 14-10, but Montgomery drove home a kill to seal the match and end the Bucs’ five-year regional round losing streak.

“It is awesome, I am proud of the kids, it has been a big improvement,” said Barbe head coach Jeremy White. “The experience from last year helped us. We had a lot of young kids last year that were strong for us and we had some young kids that played freshmen or junior varsity last year that stepped up. These girls have a lot of heart and have worked hard through the year.”

Montgomery finished with 15 kills, 5 digs and 5 blocks. Kaitlin Corbello had 11 kills and 3 digs, including 3 kills in the pivotal fourth set.

“(Corbello) came back from an injury and played really well, helped carry us through that set,” said White. “It was nice for Peyton to come through in the fifth set. We needed someone to come out and put the ball away, show we had some authority when we swing at the ball.”

Parker led Covington (24-13) with 22 kills.

Ebony Lewis had 10 kills and six blocks for the Bucs. Courtney LaFargue had 41 assists and Bruchhaus added 36 digs.

St. Louis advanced to the Division III quarterfinals with a three-set win over Cecilia. The No. 5 Saints will play No. 4 Ben Franklin at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Iota beat Sacred Heart of New Orleans in five sets to reach the Division IV quarterfinals. The No. 6 Lady Dogs will face No. 3 Newman at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Westlake, Iowa, Sam Houston and DeQuincy all lost their regional round matches.
