Police make arrest in connection with fatal shooting on North Cherry Street

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Thursday’s North Cherry Street double shooting that left one man dead and a woman wounded.
Lionel J. Rubin, 27, who was arrested at 3:45 a.m. Friday, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. His bond was set at $1.5 million.
Lake Charles Police Chief Don Dixon on Friday requested assistance from the public in finding another person believed to have been involved in the crime that took place early Thursday at 611 N. Cherry St.
“We know there were two shooters but have not been able to identify the second one,” Dixon said.
Dixon said that anyone who spoke to or saw Rubin on Thursday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. should call 337-491-1311 and speak to investigators.
Dixon said the shooters who killed 23-year-old Shane Landry and wounded a 62-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, should be considered dangerous.
“They shot a 62-year-old unarmed woman and an unarmed male. There were 7- and 3-year-old children in the home. It is the grace of God that they were not injured,” he said.
Dixon said doctors performed surgery on the woman, who is expected to survive her injuries.
Investigators do not know the motive for the crime, but know the shooters had surveillance on the home prior to the shootings.
“Only a coward and a punk would do something like this,” Dixon said.
He echoed the sentiments of residents and police investigators who described the street as quiet and peaceful.
Police believe the shooters knew Landry.
“This is a great neighborhood. Right know, we are asking the public for help,” Dixon said.
