Search suspended for six reported missing in Gulf

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for six people reported missing in the Gulf of Mexico, two days after a mayday call said they were abandoning their sinking fishing boat in the waters off Galveston, Texas.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm said Tuesday that crews searched an area of more than 2,855 square miles but found no life raft, bodies or debris from the vessel. He says no one has come forward to say their relatives or acquaintances are missing.

Brahm says if authorities receive additional information they could renew their search.

The Coast Guard received a radio message Sunday from a boat captain saying his vessel was sinking and that the six people on board were planning to escape in an orange life raft.
