50-foot-deep hole opens in Tennessee couple's yard

FAIRVIEW, Tenn. (AP) — A Williamson County couple wants engineers to deal with a deep hole that developed in their front yard.

Dean Parker told The Tennessean the hole opened last week after abundant rainfall. It was noticed Friday, about 40 feet from the Parkers' home.

A family friend rappelled to the bottom of the 9-foot-wide hole and measured the depth at 50 feet. He also found a couple of underground voids and a 6-foot tunnel, which runs in front of some homes.

The Parkers' next-door neighbor, Randal Lampley, said standing water always quickly disappears after a heavy rain and he has wondered where it was going.

The Parkers have asked the county and the city of Fairview to send engineers to advise them about what to do.
