LAFAYETTE (AP) — A student at Lafayette's Northside High School has been arrested for allegedly ramming a pregnant teacher in the stomach.

The Advertiser reported that the 17-year-old student was arrested just after noon Thursday by Lafayette police on a charge of battery of a schoolteacher. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center but released later Thursday.

The condition of the teacher was not available.

Police said the conflict began as the teacher removed another student from her classroom to avoid a physical altercation; she followed the student into the hallway. The police statement said the accused 17-year-old tried to open the door from within the classroom and allegedly rammed the teacher as she blocked the doorway.
