Last Modified: Thursday, May 10, 2012 10:29 AM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A national assessment of eighth-grade science education shows Louisiana scores improving only slightly.

But the improvement was not considered statistically significant and the state continued to lag behind the national average.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress report released Thursday showed Louisiana 8th graders with an average score of 143 in a sampling taken in 2011.

The NAEP report said it was not a significant improvement over the 2009 score of 139 and left the state below the national average of 151. Forty-three states had higher average scores.
