State closing public oyster grounds

Last Modified: Tuesday, January 31, 2012 11:50 AM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says it will soon close public oyster areas east of the Mississippi River.

Secretary Robert Barham signed an order to close the oyster season on public oyster grounds east of the river on Thursday.

Officials say the areas are being closed because of the low oyster stock size. Oystermen have been struggling since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in April 2010 and oysters in many areas have not come back in the numbers harvesters had hoped.
