Ex-nonprofit worker from Baton Roug pleads guilty to embezzlement

BATON ROUGE (AP) — A former finance director for a Baton Rouge nonprofit organization that aids low-income residents admitted in federal court that she embezzled nearly $51,000 from the agency in 2011.

The Advocate reported Kiamani A. Beasley, 27, of Jeanerette, pleaded guilty Tuesday before U.S. District Judge James Brady to one felony count of embezzlement from a federally funded entity, the Louisiana Association of Community Action Partners.

Brady ordered a pre-sentence investigation report and said he will schedule a sentencing date once the report is completed. The judge told Beasley, who is in custody, that she faces up to 10 years in prison and fines totaling $250,000. He also said restitution is applicable.

Federal prosecutors alleged in January that Beasley took money "for her personal entertainment" from federal funds intended to help low-income people weatherize their homes. Beasley also took money intended to provide computer training to Louisiana's community action agencies for the benefit of low-income Louisiana residents, prosecutors said.

"That's the way it happened?" Brady asked a shackled Beasley.

"Yes sir," she replied.

Beasley admitted taking $50,857 from more than $10.8 million provided by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to LACAP between April 2009 and November 2011.

Beasley's embezzlement occurred between Sept. 5, 2011, and Nov. 2, 2011, Assistant U.S. Attorney Reginald Jones told Brady. In some cases, Jones said, Beasley stole federal funds simply "by writing checks to herself from LACAP accounts."

LACAP was established to organize and strengthen the 42 private and public Community Action Agencies in Louisiana, prosecutors said in January when charges were filed against Beasley.
