New Orleans man gets 25 years for impersonating cop

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A 50-year-old New Orleans man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbing people while impersonating a police officer.

The Times-Picayune reported Van Gabriel pleaded guilty in Jefferson Parish to 10 charges tied to four crimes in Kenner and Gretna in 2010.

In his Jefferson Parish crimes, he admitted last week that beginning in April 2010, he was armed with a pistol and a police radio when he used a badge confront people and steal their wallets. Three of the crimes happened in Kenner, while the fourth happened in Gretna.

Gabriel pleaded guilty to armed robbery, three counts of impersonating a police officer, simple kidnapping, three counts of simple robbery and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
