Audit questions former mayor's retirement

Last Modified: Wednesday, February 29, 2012 1:01 PM

ST. GABRIEL (AP) — A state audit says former St. Garbiel Mayor George Grace — now being tried on federal racketeering charges — wrongly used city funds to pay his personal contribution into a state retirement account.

The Advocate reported that the state legislative auditor said Grace should have contributed $26,735 of his own money into the Municipal Employees Retirement System. The audit said the city paid just over $55,000 toward Grace's retirement.

The report also said Grace further failed to get St. Gabriel City Council approval for the expenditure and made no efforts to set up a payment plan to reimburse the city.

Current Mayor Lionel Johnson Jr. said he is forwarding the audit to the district attorney.

Grace's attorney, Robert Marionneaux Jr., declined comment.
