Downsville parents seek charter school

Last Modified: Monday, May 21, 2012 11:09 AM

DOWNSVILLE (AP) — Parents in Downsville say they want to preserve their community school and they are willing to charter the school to ensure they do.

The News-Star report the Union Parish School Board recently accepted an application for Downsville Charter School which would create a kindergarten through 12th grade school at the existing Downsville High School.

The Union Parish School Board has 90 days to decide whether to approve or reject the charter application or to take no action.

If the board denies or takes no action, the charter school board can then apply to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education for a charter.

Superintendent George Cannon said he is investigating the impact of the proposed charter school on the district.
