Coca-Cola: Barq's redesign returns to roots

Last Modified: Wednesday, February 29, 2012 1:01 PM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Coca-Cola Co. says it's returning to its root beer's Gulf Coast roots with the first redesign in 20 years for Barq's label and slogan.

The new slogan is "It's Good. Since 1898." That was the year Edward Charles Edmond Barq founded Biloxi Artesian Bottling Works in Mississippi. The company later opened a plant in New Orleans.

For generations, Barq's bottles bore the words: "Drink Barq's. It's good." Another slogan, resulting from a federal ruling on the amount of caffeine that could be in root beer, was "Ubiquitous. But is it root beer?"

"Barq's has bite" was another caffeine-related slogan, used by Coca-Cola after it bought Barq's in 1995.

The company says new bottles and cans also feature a diamond pattern reminiscent of designs on the drink's original glass bottles.
