Audit: Fire district depositing checks late

One Beauregard Parish fire protection district has routinely failed to make deposits in a timely manner, according to a report released Monday, with some deposits being made more than a month after they were received.

According to an annual audit of the Beauregard Parish Fire Protection District No. 3, checks received by the district for ad valorem taxes and other revenues have not been deposited in a timely fashion. Auditor John Windham wrote in the report that this could increase the likelihood of misappropriation of assets or recording errors

Windham recommended the district, which covers Sugartown and Dry Creek, ensure all deposits are made on the same day. Some deposits were delivered directly to the Beauregard Parish Police Jury’s office, but were not passed onto fire protection district No. 3 secretary Tammy Wilson. Windham also recommended the parish accountant monitor the receipt of and timely deposit of all funds.

Wilson responded to the report in a letter to the state Legislative Auditor and agreed with Windham’s recommendations. She said the parish will make deposits on the same day received and work with the parish accountant to ensure receipts are monitored and all funds are made in a timely manner.

It was the only finding in the report. The audit for Fire Protection District No. 1, which covers Fields, Merryville and Singer, was also released Monday with no findings. (MGNonline)
