Arts Council requests veterans photos

The Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana is collecting photographs of local veterans for an upcoming tribute exhibit aboard the USS Orleck.
The photos will be projected on the ship, and military-themed artwork and regalia will be displayed throughout. The exhibit will be part of Gallery Promenade, a Friday evening art walk.
Jody Taylor, project coordinator at the Arts Council, said the photos can be of local veterans in any branch of the military and in any conflict. He said the submissions need to include the veteran’s name, service branch and any other important information.
The photos can either be dropped off at the council’s Central School office, posted on the SWLA Veterans Tribute page or emailed to Taylor at jodyt@artscouncilswla.org.
Taylor said the tribute is part of an effort to expand exhibits offered in the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District, which was approved by the state July 1.
“We thought it would be great to do a tribute to Southwest Louisiana veterans and to really get the community involved,” he said. “It’s a personal connection for the community.”
He said the USS Orleck Naval Museum was a natural choice as a popular historical site within the district. This year is also the ship’s 70th anniversary.
Taylor said the council is also excited about a new exhibit at the ACTS theater. He said art and mementos inspired by the theater, ballet, the symphony and other performing arts will be on display that evening.
Gallery Promenade — 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 — will have exhibits in different locations throughout Lake Charles and Sulphur.
Taylor said it’s a great opportunity for artists to gain publicity and for the public to connect with local artists and businesses.
