A man accused in the late Thursday rape of a Vinton woman has been arrested.

Michael William Tibbits was apprehended by Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies in Sulphur at around 3 p.m. Friday, said Vinton Police Chief Ricky Fox.

Tibbits, who is charged with aggravated rape and second-degree kidnapping, is being held on a $200,000 bond set by Judge Wilford Carter, Fox said.

Fox said Tibbits most recently had a Sulphur address and is wanted on felony charges in Mississippi and traffic charges in Arkansas.

The victim, a 19-year-old woman, was walking home from work down Goodwin Street when she was approached by and had a short conversation with a man on a bicycle, Fox said.

The victim was then grabbed from behind by the man and told that if she screamed he would kill her, Fox said. She was taken to a nearby garage on Horridge Street and raped, Fox said. The garage belonged to neither the attacker nor the victim, Fox said.

The suspect then took the victim to another residence, where he allowed her to clean up and told her that “he better not have to come looking for her,” before allowing her to leave, Fox said.

Fox said the rape was reported at 11:30 p.m., shortly after it is believed to have occurred. He said Vinton police worked all night on the case and that a tip helped lead parish deputies to Tibbits.
