In District 6, Roberts defeated Ted Atterbery Jr. with 2,250 votes, or 59 percent. Atterbery earned 1,533 votes, or 41 percent.

In a tight race in District 10, Smith defeated Becky Grove. Smith earned 1,546 votes, or 51 percent, while Grove earned 1,462 votes, or 49 percent.

Seven other new members were elected in November’s primary.

Moss Bluff, Gillis voters say no to bond issue

Voters in District 27, Moss Bluff and Gillis, declined to approve a bond issue proposed by the Calcasieu Parish School Board to finance a new elementary school.

The 20-year, $12.7 million bond issue would have been paid for through additional property taxes. Residents were overwhelmingly against the proposal, with 66 percent, or 3,465, voting no and 34 percent, or 1,824, voting yes.

School Board officials said a new school was needed because of overcrowding and expected continued growth.

Karl Bruchhaus, school superintendent, told the American Press earlier this week that if the bond issue wasn’t approved, the board would have to explore other options, such as larger class sizes in existing facilities or adding temporary buildings at schools that have room for them, to address the overcrowding issue.

Results are complete but unofficial.
