Area amateur radio operators will gather in Pinederosa Park in Westlake June 23-24 for the Southwest Louisiana Amateur Radio Repeater Club Field Day.

The local event is held in conjunction with the American Radio Relay League Field Day, which will involve more than 35,000 radio enthusiasts across the U.S. and Canada.

Groups will attempt to contact as many other radio operators as possible and learn to operate their station gear in abnormal and less-than-optimal conditions, according to a club news release.

The event helps to hone communication skills of ham radio operators who could be called into service in the event of disaster and post-disaster situations. The technology operators use allows them to transmit voice, data and images through the air near and far without depending on commercial systems.

The event will run overnight from noon June 23 to noon June 24. For more, call James Davant at 625-5086 or email him at ddavant@bellsouth.net.
