Editorial: Boustany has track record of serving Southwest Louisiana well

Charles Boustany Jr. has proven track record over the past eight years of providing exemplary representation for Southwest Louisiana in Congress.

That’s why the American Press recommends that area voters re-elect Boustany and return him to the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

Boustany has been an effective voice for area interests in Congress.

He passionately and successfully argued during redistricting debate in Baton Rouge — trumping Gov. Bobby Jindal and five of his colleagues in the state’s U.S. House delegation — that the former Seventh Congressional District which he has represented since 2005 should remain intact as much as possible and not be carved up with Calcasieu Parish being thrown into a district that would have included Shreveport and stretched to the Arkansas border. His work led to the new Third Congressional District that kept Lake Charles and Lafayette in the same district.

Among the five candidates in the race, Boustany has the best knowledge of the local issues that affect area residents.

He has been a compelling advocate for the Port of Lake Charles, arguably the most vital component in Southwest Louisiana’s economic engine. Boustany has also authored the Realize America’s Martime Promise (RAMP) Act, which seeks to put an end to congressional raids on taxes paid by shippers that is intended to fund dredging of vital shipping lanes by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

As a former heart surgeon, Boustany has also been a creditable voice of experience and reason when it has come to the passage of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, consistently pointing out the foibles in the plan.

Area rice, sugar cane and soybean farmers have also benefited from Boustany’s advocacy regarding subsidies and environmental policies and trade initiatives with foreign markets.

The five-term congressman has also effectively voiced residents’ disgust in the maddening delays of construction of permanent veteran clinics in both Lake Charles and Lafayette.

The American Press has steered away from making recommendations in individual elections over the past few years. But we believe that Charles Boustany Jr. represents the mainstream interests of Southwest Louisiana residents.

That’s why we unequivocally recommend his re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Title: Bad Behavior

Boustany and Landry are both good men gone bad. They have brought what is wrong in Washington to Louisiana. This ridiculous back biting and outlandish attacks ads is uncalled for. What a shame it seems to send either one to Washington.
I believe if pressed either would say 'the other side started it'. So they are keeping it up.
The ads and charges are shallow and ridiculous. It makes both men look foolish. Why doesn't someone be a gentleman and rise above the fray, that's who I'd vote for.

Title: Your opinion doesn't count

Why are you recommending any candidate? I thought the purpose of the news was to report the facts in which we can draw our own opinion. I will turn to a different source that does just that - report facts, not impose their own opinion on the people. .

Title: RE: Good Liberal Pragmatist

I find your description of Dr. Boustany comical. The doctor is far from liberal, a staunch conservative in fact. It's just that he is running against a trial lawyer from the radical right who wanted to ship Calcasieu Parish into John Fleming's district just to try and secure more votes in his "coastal, one-voice" district. This is the same trial lawyer who is now preying on those same constituents for votes.
Southwest Louisiana is radical neither left nor right. We have, for the first time in my lifetime, the chance to stand up for Southwest Louisiana and re-elect someone who actually gives a damn about the western part of this district , instead of someone preying on Lake Charles residents once every two years.

Title: Good Liberal Pragmatist

Boustany has a good track record of being liberal on some issues and conservative on others. I'm voting for Obama/Boustany

Title: Dr.Charles Boustany endorsement

I see that we are on the same page with the endorsement of Dr. Charles Boustany for U.S. Congress we need someone that has our back, sometime we may not agree on some things but the end results is we have been getting a lot of what we need here in Southwest Louisiana, they need to pull there head out of the sand.
