SULPHUR — Baseball is a few weeks away, but the Barbe Bucs used the long ball to devastating effect in a 53-32 District 3-5A basketball win over Sulphur Friday night.

The Bucs (13-5, 4-1) led wire to wire and scored 16 straight points in the first half to take control. Twelve of the points during the spurt came on 3-pointers, with Damion Martin and Savon Price making two each. When the Bucs weren’t hitting from long range, center Steven Henderson was controlling the paint, scoring a game-high 18 points.

“Defensively we were able to get some stops and create some turnovers,” said Barbe head coach Carl Klein. “We were able to get some shots in transition, some easy buckets. We also were able to hit the jumper from the perimeter. Us knocking down a few shots early, we were able to open up and spread the floor a little bit, get the ball inside to our big guys and let them go to work.

Martin finished with 13 points.

“Damion really stepped up for us tonight and did a great job,” Klein said. “He was running the show, making sure guys were where they were supposed to be and also knocked down a few shots and distributed the ball well. He was great on defense.”

Sulphur (7-15, 0-5) started well, trailing 9-7 when Barbe began its surge. The Tors outscored Barbe by three in the third quarter to pull within 14 points, closing the quarter with an 8-2 run.

The Bucs outscored Sulphur by seven in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Barbe opened the quarter with a 10-3 run to stretch the lead to 19. Henderson and Devin Anderson each scored three points during the run.
