The 7-year-old Moss Bluff Elementary student shot Monday morning at the school is recovering but remains in critical condition, according to Ron Richard, spokesman for the victim’s family.

Gage Meche was shot after a student picked up a gun that dropped out of the backpack of another student in a first-grade classroom, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said the 7-year-old was an innocent bystander and that the other children involved wouldn’t be charged. But he said charges may be filed against the owner of the gun taken to the school.

Meche was flown to a Lafayette hospital, where he underwent surgery Monday for an abdominal injury, Richard said. The surgery was successful, he said, and Gage was awake and alert Tuesday.

“We are very hopeful, and the doctors are being positive,” he said.

Richard said the Meche family appreciates the prayers and well wishes of the community. They also ask that “everyone take a moment to make sure that any firearms in their home are properly secured,” he said.

Richard said an account has been set up at Jeff Davis Bank — under “MBE First Grade Student” — to help the victim and his family.
