Dorothy Ann Broussard

Dorothy Ann Broussard, 92, of Sweet Lake died at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 in a local care facility.

Mrs. Broussard was born in Sweet Lake on Dec. 4, 1921 where she resided all of her life. She was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church and belonged to the altar society.

She enjoyed hosting Pokeno parties and was known for her ability to cook and enjoyed it very much.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons and their wives, Larry Broussard and Genny, Harold Broussard and Susan, all of Sweet Lake; a daughter and her husband, Bonnie Berry and Lynn of Sweet Lake; a sister, Pearl Pellerin of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Antoine Broussard; a daughter, Ora Lee Broussard; two brothers, Samuel Lee and Wesley LeBouef; and three sisters, Elta Huber, Lucy Kuhlman and Leola Fogleman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Monsignor Harry Greig will officiate. Burial will follow in Grand Lake Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Monday from 4-9 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until the start of the service.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Harbor Hospice and also the staff of Grand Cove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the great care they showed Mrs. Broussard.

Leslie “Les” Downey, 79, of Moss Bluff, died Friday Dec. 20 at a local hospital.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 24 in Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Old Ritchie Cemetery.

Patricia A. Dufrene

Patricia A. Kelley Dufrene, 73, of Lake Charles, La., died at 3:50 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Dufrene was born April 29, 1940 in Oakdale, La., where she lived until moving to Lake Charles in 1954. She also lived eighteen years in Moss Bluff before settling back in Lake Charles in 1989. She was a 1958 graduate of LaGrange Senior High School and worked at Bill Fontenot Insurance, Cagle Chevrolet and at various other companies throughout the years. Mrs. Dufrene also worked as a substitute teacher in Moss Bluff for a number of years. She attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. She was a past member of the Lake Area Bird Club and enjoyed raising parrots with her husband. Mrs. Dufrene enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling during her younger years. She also enjoyed country dancing with her husband and bowling and participated in a women’s bowling league. Her true passion in life was for her family; her children and her grandchildren will always hold a special place in her heart.

Mrs. Dufrene is survived by her husband of 55 years, Carroll J. Dufrene, Jr.; son, Michael Dufrene and wife Christie of Lake Charles; daughter, Kristi Abshire and husband Jason of Lafayette, La.; brother, James Kelley and wife Susan of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Garrett Dufrene, Kaelyn Abshire, Matthew Dufrene; and her favorite dog, Bootsie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Edith Johnson Kelley; granddaughter, Hope Dufrene; and parents-in-law, Carroll and Lucille Dufrene.

Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverends Don Johnson and Trevor Kelley will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 5-9 p.m. and continue on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until the start of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

KINDER — Reverend Wade Lormand, 76, died Friday, Dec. 20. His funeral is 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 in Kingsfarm Pentecostal Church. Burial will follow in Jessie Johnson Cemetery under the direction of Reed Funeral Home.

Margaret Matthews, 89, of Vinton, La., passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Raymond McHenry of Westgate Baptist Church in Beaumont. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Born in Griffithville, Ark., on Jan. 15, 1924, Margaret was the daughter of Willie Bratten and Audie Barlow Caldwell. She waitressed in Orange for 35 years and was voted best waitress in Orange. Margaret also was an avid word search player.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor Matthews; daughter, Pansy Chadwick; sister, Ester Scritchfield; granddaughter, Rebel Curtis; and great-grandson, Walker Rice.

Margaret is survived by her children, Peggy Brewer and husband Bobby of Orange, Texas, Patricia Smith and husband Clay of Dumas, Ark., Donnie Bryant and wife Donna of Orange, Texas, Ronnie Bryant and wife Jean of Beaumont, Texas, Pauline Guidry of Nederland, Texas, Jackie Matthews of Bridge City, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Headlee Caldwell of Benton, Arkansas.

Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Villafano, Alan Bryant, Trevor Surles, Tyler Surles, Mark Brem, and Clay Smith.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Holland Place Assisted Living in Nederland, as well as the medical staff at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for their love and care shown during this time.

Funeral services for Randy L. Schmidt, 59, of DeRidder, La., will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, in Church of God in Christ Mennonite Highland Congregation, DeRidder, La., with Minister Larry Schmidt and Minister Kevin Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Highland Congregation Cemetery under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder.

Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the church, then from 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24 until service time in the church.

Randy was born to the marriage of Louie Lester Schmidt and Helen Koehn Schmidt on Dec. 14, 1954, in Turlock, Calif. He passed away Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Oshner Medical Center in New Orleans, La.

Randy moved back to DeRidder in November, 2008. He was an employee at Uneeda Shed where he served in many different capacities.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lora Schmidt of DeRidder; two sons, Roy Schmidt and Darren Schmidt, both of DeRidder; daughters Rachel Redger and husband Brenden, Sherry Decker and husband Davin, all of DeRidder; brother, Gary Schmidt and wife Bethine of Norwood, Mo.; sisters, Donna Classen and husband Harry of DeRidder, Lorrie Holdeman and husband Gary of Hesston, Kan., Pam Johnson and husband Alan of Dumas, Ark.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Kari Ann.

Wilfred Freeman Wilson

ELTON — Wilfred Freeman Wilson, 71, passed away on Dec. 22, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family and friends. Funeral service will be held on Christmas Eve at 1 p.m. at Indian Bible Church. Rev. John Cernek will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home of Elton.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at Ardoin Funeral Home of Elton between the hours of 3-9 p.m. A singing service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Wilfred was a lifelong resident of Elton. He started working at the age of 15 for Savant Sawmill and Lumber in Indian Village. He retired from Tidex Inc. after 30 years of service. His last employment was with Coby Construction Inc. He enjoyed doing yard work and the outdoors. Wilfred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He passed away on his 51st anniversary of marriage to his devoted wife, Myrna. Wilfred will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna Louise Abbey-Wilson of Elton; his son, Dennis Bel Wilson and wife Mechelle, and his daughter, Rebecca Jayne Knight and husband Noel Edward, all of Elton; seven grandchildren, Joshua Chapman, Ang’el Skylar Wilson, Joseph McCrea, Allison McCrea, Mikailen McCrea, Kiara Veazie and Jakobe Veazie; six great-grandchildren, Lyric Skye Wilson, Onyx Ace Wilson, Jarredyn Jace Duhon, Jaysten Khol Duhon, Audi Boyce McCrea, Joshua Brent Chapman Jr.; one brother, Manuel John; two sisters, Linda Laughlin, Lora Langley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Wilfred is preceded in death by two sons, Elmer Wayne, Ang’el Jorge; his mother, Lycia John; and his brother, Alvin Wilson.
