An early Sunday morning traffic accident in Moss Bluff has claimed the life of a Westlake man.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office officials said Jerry W. Sonnier Jr., 26, was traveling west on Gateway Drive around 2:45 a.m. at a high rate of speed when his car ran off the roadway, striking a ditch and culvert.
“The car then became airborne and landed in the south ditch after overturning several times,” CPSO spokeswoman Kim Myers said in a news release.
Sonnier was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, 25-year-old Jamie G. Stratton of Lake Charles was taken to a local hospital and is listed in serious condition.
“Neither Sonnier nor Stratton were wearing a seatbelt and high speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash,” Myers said.
A toxicology report will be conducted as mandated by state law.
The lead investigator is Sr. Cpl. Chris Ramos.
