A garbage truck traveling on Interstate 10 Sunday morning overturned on the Exit 36 westbound ramp near La. 397 around 10:27 a.m., an official with Louisiana State Police Troop D said.

“The driver, 31-year-old Mark Darby of Lake Charles, lost control of the vehicle as he approached the stop sign,” Sgt. James Anderson said. “Darby was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.”

Anderson said excessive speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Darby was charged with careless operation, and the crash remains under investigation.

The exit ramp has been reopened as of 3 p.m., but motorists in the area should use caution as clean-up is expected to last another four hours, Anderson said.

The truck belongs to Custom Ecology Inc. of Walker.
