Whether you are the second coming of Bob Villa or can barely swing a hammer, you should always keep a set of tools around the house.
If you are a new homeowner or just haven’t gotten around to stocking up your toolbox, it is better to be prepared for minor repairs then having to go out and spend too much money.
Stine marketing manager Jeremy Stine believes it is vital to have a basic set of tools around the house for everyday needs.
“Having the basics at your home is essential,” Stine said. “There are a lot of things you can fix with just your basic wrench or some other simple tool. Every time you have something to fix or put together at your house it is such a relief to have everything you need right there instead of having to run to the store each time something comes up.”
So if you are looking to start a tool collection or are just in need of a few things, here are 10 tools every homeowner should have:
A good general-purpose handsaw is useful for trimming branches off trees or cutting lumber for projects around the house. Easy to use, reliable and generally useful, the saw is a must-have for home improvement.
Ever hear that old saying, “Measure twice, cut once?” You can also think of it as, “Measure twice, pay once.” The tape measure is a must-have for everything where size is crucial.
When you have a large project that requires you to tighten and loosen a bunch of nuts and bolts, it’s time for a socket wrench. Its ratcheting mechanism allows you to tighten a nut without having to remove and refit the wrench.
No instructions needed here. A hammer is used virtually in every room of the house. Just remember to watch those thumbs.
Possibly the most used of all tools, the screwdriver is an absolute must-have. There is always something that needs tightening or something that needs to be put together. Make sure to get both a flat head and a Phillips in various sizes.
Pipes are potentially the most vulnerable and unreliable part of the home. A wrench is always first on the scene where there is pipe work and water involved.
A drill is a necessary part of any home-improvement project ranging from small home improvements such as fixing doorknobs, to large projects like building kitchen cabinets. The power drill is a necessity for every household.
Whether you are hanging a picture or repairing a table the level is a handy tool to make sure everything is nice and straight.
Vise grip or locking pliers come in handy when you need an extra hand. Some pliers use a mechanism that allows one-handed release of the locking mechanism. They are a versatile tool that can be used as pliers, a pipe wrench, an adjustable wrench, or just a clamp.
From changing light bulbs to those working in hard-to-reach spots, you will need some form of ladder around the house. A small three-step ladder may do the trick for a house with lower ceilings.
You can find all of these tools along with more than 76,000 other home improvement items at your local Stine or online at www.stinehome.com
