NEW ROADS (AP) — Bond has been set at $1 million for a 24-year-old man arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in death of his 91-year-old grandmother.

The Advocate reported that Pointe Coupee Parish deputies arrested Brandon Battley this week at a hospital in Lafayette and charged him in the death of grandmother, Beulah Morris, whose body was found Tuesday on the kitchen floor of her home.

Sheriff Bud Torres says Morris died from blunt-force trauma to the head.

Morris’ body was discovered by Battley’s mother who said Wednesday she went to check on her mother after learning from her brother that Beulah Morris hadn’t answered the door when he knocked.

Torres says Battley had admitted himself to Acadia Vermilion Hospital, citing mental issues.

Bond was set Friday during a court hearing.
